Brian D2025-04-22Verified Birthday treat This is a hidden gem, the front doesn’t really show what’s inside. Had a fantastic meal to celebrate the wife’s birthday. The food is extremely flavoursome and very filling, needless to say we asked for a doggy bag because we couldn’t eat it all. The staff are very attentive without being overbearing. This was our first trip and won’t be our last ! Sarah Buckley2025-04-17Verified Great food great service Jarek was amazing and looked after and catered for us so well. I had my foot in a boot and without me asking he found me a chair to prop up my leg! Doug W2025-04-16Verified Super curry Approaching this very fine restaurant, as the taxi turned into what appeared to be a housing estate, you would not expect to find such a gem hidden here. When inside however, the warm, friendly ambience and bustle of the place soon assured us of good things to come. We were not disappointed and enjoyed one of the very best Indian diners that any of us in our party of four had ever had. The service was excellent and the food absolutely first class. Rob H2025-04-12Verified Delicious authentic Indian food Beautiful food and great staff. Had a wondeful evening celebrating our anniversary. Definitely will be back to visit again. robhendy12025-04-12Verified Unique and the best Indian food ever Amazing food! 4 of us ate there for dinner on 11/04/25. This place is an absolute gem and the food is second to none; quite different to your normal Indian restaurant/curry house selection. Food is perfectly cooked, very nicely presented with unexpected garnishes that lift it to the next level. I can honestly say it is the most interesting and flavoursome Indian food I have ever tasted. Clearly word has got around as it was heaving. Dasha2025-04-04Verified Excellent service Sumit was really great taking or order and catering for an allergy. He looked after us really well, we will definitely be back! Lovely food too, and nice environment. Rucha R2025-04-02Verified Go to authentic Indian food place A must try for anyone looking to try the authentic spicy indian food. Every dish stands out with its unique preparation style but I would highly recommend prawns koliwada and Chettinad chicken. It’s simply delicious. Not to forget, the team was extremely warm and welcoming, prompt with their service. Highly recommended this place! selina n2025-03-24Verified Beautiful Food, Relaxing Atmosphere and Excellent Staff :) Had our first visit to Spices and Spirits tonight for a family meal in memory of my Nan. What a beautiful evening! Let me start by saying I am in no way a 'foody' or professional chef by any means, I am simply comparing my experience with many other Indian restaurants I have visited throughout Basingstoke over many years. 1) ARRIVAL: As soon as we walked in the atmosphere was really nice and welcoming with lovely lighting and seating areas. Being a Monday it was not as busy as it may be on other nights but first impressions = spot on! 2) FOOD & DRINKS: Some real amazing flavours that I've not experienced in other restaurants. 2a) Poppadoms: Even with these the poppadoms were served warm; the mint sauce had a slightly thicker consistency and was so much more flavoursome; the onion salad was diced perfectly and again there was so much more flavour; and the same for the mango chutney. I couldn't believe how much difference in taste I was already experiencing with just the basket of poppadoms - Amazing! 2b) Mains (we didn't have starters): Three different dishes with two different rice and a side. When my other half's Sizzling Lamb Chops came out I was drooling - they looked and smelt soooo good I was feeling jealous of his order. Then my Ghati Lamb and Mum's Kolhapuri along with Mushroom Rice, Keema Rice and a side of Aloo Gobi were quick to follow. Oh...My.... Goodness! I tried the Kolhapuri (too hot for me but Mum loves spice). Mum loved the heat from dish but also loved that is was so flavourful as well (not just a spice hit) My Ghati Lamb was so delicious, you could really taste the combination of spices in the dish as opposed to other restaurants where it usually tastes .... ummmm ... a bit flat I suppose is the best way to describe. Both the rice dishes were really tasty as well with some nice chunky slices of mushroom and little pieces of diced lamb in each - both had a unique flavour to them and the portions were just right so between three of us there was not much left over like what usually happens in other restaurants (I hate to waste food so this was a big tick for me). The Aloo Gobi was just amazing, full of flavour and the little slices of ginger on top really took it to another level. 2c) Dessert: We were satisfyingly (is that a word?) full but not that much that Mum and me didn't have room for a shared Gulab Jamun dessert. Something we have both eaten many times before due to my Nan & Grandads Indian heritage but never before have they tasted soooo good! I'm not sure if that was because they were served warm/hot (which we had never tried before) or if they just make the best Gulab Jamuns but they were an absolute hit and I could quite happily order several of those in one hit and eat the whole lot! :) 2d) Drinks: A couple of Appletizers, a Cobra beer (draught) and a whiskey each in honour of my Nan who loved her whiskeys. All drinks were tasty and not really much different to where you would get anywhere else however I did try the Indian single malt which I quite enjoyed, it had a slight 'cinnamon' aftertaste (I think) which was warming (like with the food, I am no whiskey connoisseur so this is my personal taste). 3) SERVICE: All staff were welcoming and friendly from start to finish. What I liked about this visit was you didn't feel rushed to place your orders. Some might class that as 'slow' service but I actually quite like having a bit of time to look at the menus in between chatting with whoever you're there with and not feeling that you have to either miss out on conversation while you have a quick look to decide, or carry on chatting then have to make a quick decision when they come over to take your order. I like not being rushed through my decisions and the same for the service of the courses. There was a comfortable amount of time between each course where you could enjoy and chat without feeling rushed. (This may vary if the restaurant is facing busier times). We spent approx. 2-hours there in total which I personally feel is a good amount of time for a meal out. It was a bit quieter there so on busier nights this might vary. 4) PRESENTATION: Absolutely blown away by the presentation! Poppadoms came out in a standy-up thing rather than your usual 'wicker' basket, and the condiments were beautifully presented in a tray of mini-dishes. Rice dishes came out in what I can only describe as silver 'goblet' (tall) things which was a lovely way to serve rice I though, and each dish was served in different bowls (I know this may not mean much to some people but is was just a refreshing change to see some thought and attention going into how the dishes were presented). OVERALL: It was an amazing experience and I could not fault anything. I am so glad we decided to come here for this special occasion and will most definitely be back as there is a whole menu that I need to explore and I can't wait to try everything on there! Thank you to all the staff working front and back to make this such a wonderful meal out. Kudos and many thanks to you all! :) tamattv2025-03-23Verified Nice evening Proud to bring family and friends here , awesome service and food.
